There are many different types of vacuum cleaners, from many different manufacturers, and despite some looking very futuristic, and others looking very minimal, they all work pretty much the same way.

A vacuum cleaner picks up dirt in a similar way to how a straw works.  Because there’s a difference in pressure at the top of the straw compared to the bottom, the liquid passes up the straw.  Another way to describe it is like the changing of the air pressure over a plane wing so that the plane can fly.

The vacuum cleaner has a motor that drives a fan which forces the air forwards towards the exhaust port.  When the dust is driven forward using the brushes or the nozzle, the air pressure increases in front of the fan, and decreases behind the fan.  This creates suction, which keeps the air coming into the vacuum cleaner.  Using friction, such as the brushes at the front of an upright vacuum cleaner, or a brush on the end of a nozzle, the vacuum cleaner picks up dust and debris.

As the dirty air is sucked through the cleaner, it goes through a filter or vacuum cleaner bag.  The holes in the filter or bag are large enough to let air through, but not large enough to allow dust through. This means that the dust will collect in the bag, or on the filter.

To be effective, the cleaner must have an efficient motor that runs at a high speed, and the airflow needs to be kept clear of dust or debris.  The brushes and nozzle will also need to be effective to agitate stubborn dirt and dust that is deep in the carpet.

Wet and Dry Vacuum cleaners work using a different collection system, because the liquid wouldn’t work with a paper collection bag or filter.  The air stream passes over a bucket, and slows down. As the air stream slows, the liquids and heavier dirt particles fall into the bucket, which can be easily emptied once you’ve finished.

Cyclone vacuum cleaners work differently. The air stream is sent through one or more cylinders along a high speed spiral path.  This is like a roller coaster, or a spin dryer.  As the air travels in a spiral, the dust and dirt is subjected to a strong centrifugal force which removes them from the airstream, and deposits them in the bottom of the cylinder.

Now you know more about vacuum cleaners, isn’t it time you made sure yours works properly?

For those interested in bagless vacuum cleaners, there are two options from the Sanyo home electronic products range that would be worth your taking a look at. The first option is the SC-270 Canister and the other option is the SC-H2000 Upright Sanyo Bagless Vacuum Cleaner.

The SC-270 Canister is a yellow vacuum with a 7 amp motor, a 2.6 quart dust capacity and a 15 foot cord with a cord reel. It also has a carrying handle, so it is easy to move around and a 6 piece tool set which includes a flexible hose, two wands, a floor tool, a round brush and a crevice tool and an on board tool caddy to store them all in. The tool set makes it easy to use this vacuuming machine to clean anywhere you need to. This Vacuum Cleaner can also be stored upright to take up less space in your closet.

The SC-H2000 has a higher price tag, but it also has more features as well. It is a metallic red and titanium vacuum with a 12 amp motor, a large dust container in the back so it is easy to get to when it needs to be emptied, and a 30 foot power cord with quick cord release. It also has 6 tools to store on board, including a stretch hose, 2 extension wands, a crevice tool, and a combination dusting and upholstery tool.

In addition to the features mentioned above, the Upright Sanyo Bagless Vacuum Cleaner also has a wide 16 inch cleaning path with an Edge Grabber on the front of the nozzle that makes it possible to clean right up to the baseboards, HEPA filtration to trap dust and bacteria and keep the air cleaner (which is especially nice for those who suffer from allergies), and automatic carpet height adjustment. It only weighs 18 pounds and has a bright headlight which many people like.

Even though the SC-H2000 Vacuum Cleaner is more expensive than the SC-270 Cannister, it however has more power, a longer cord, and an HEPA filtration system. It is therefore well worth the extra money if these features matter to you.

Dyson Vacuum cleaners are increasingly popular, and it’s not hard to see why.  Their revolutionary Cyclone technology removed the needs for bags to collect the dirt and dust picked up by the vacuum cleaner.  Dyson’s are also very effective at cleaning, which is the most important feature of a vacuum cleaner.

If you have a Dyson then you probably use it more than you used your old vacuum cleaner, and can find more uses for it.  As it’s so easy to use and so versatile, you have no excuses for having dirty carpets!

Despite their incredible performance and capabilities, it is a mistake to think that Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t need a bit of TLC now and again.  In the same way that a car needs servicing, a vacuum cleaner needs to be checked over once every few months.

There are some people who are not happy with the performance of their Dyson vacuum cleaner, and don’t see the advantages compared to their old vacuum cleaner.  This is not likely to be down to the Dyson itself, but more likely to be because they are probably not looking after it properly.

There are some common complaints regarding Dyson vacuum cleaners.  These can often be resolved by cleaning filters and making sure that there are no blockages.  In the same way that a car needs fuel and oil to work properly, a Dyson needs some basic maintenance too, to keep it working properly

If your Dyson is losing suction or not picking up properly, then you will need to check that the brush bar is not blocked with hair, fluff or threads.  You might need to check the filters too, to make sure that they are not blocked. You should also check that the hose isn’t cracked or damage, and that it is not blocked.

If your vacuum cleaner intermittently cuts out, then there could be a problem with the power cable. Most vacuum cleaners suffer with power cable problems, as the cleaner is moved and pushed back and forth a lot.  It is recommended that the power cable is replaced rather than repaired.

If there are burning smells when you use your vacuum cleaner, then it is likely that the motor needs to be replaced.   Replacing the motor is straightforward, and can be done at home. You don’t have to be a mechanic or electrician to be able to get your Dyson up and running again.

By regularly checking the filters and the brush bar, as well as the power cable, you can prevent many common issues associated with Dyson vacuum cleaners before they become serious problems.

If you haven’t checked your Dyson for a while, why not do it the next time you use it?  By making sure that your Dyson has clean filters and there is no problem with the power cable, you can continue to use your Dyson, and enjoy its features and performance.

Lightweight and durable, it can also be used on hard floors and has a powerful filtration system that makes sure that the air that is pushed back into the room is clean and dust free. Since it is not very heavy, one doesnt have to worry about leaving markings on wooden floors. This is made doubly sure with its rubber wheels and special hard floor nozzle that has soft bristles.

Eureka 4870HZ Boss SmartVac

One of the best rated vacuum cleaner products of all time, this Eureka upright vacuum is known for its sealed HEPA system, its Power Paw Turbo for vertical cleaning of stairs and upholstery, and its unique suction control feature that allows users to direct how much suction is needed for cleaning floors and carpets.
